Automated nucleic acid extraction

mim_c Laboratories maintains two Qiagen QIAcube Connect MDx instruments for automation of nucleic acid extraction processes from many specimen types, with capacity for 24 samples per run. Automation of the pipetting and processing steps of Qiagen column-based extraction protocols enhances throughput and reproducibility while lowering user bias and error.

We offer two levels of service:

  • Hands-off service: users/customers are provided extraction tubes for aliquots of specimen prior to drop off, and mim_c Laboratories staff complete all subsequent extraction steps using the Qiagen PowerFecal Pro protocol (other protocols are available with this service - please inquire). This service also includes extract quantification (UV-Vis spectroscopy) and arraying of extracted nucleic acid samples into 96-well plates, with subsequent delivery to the mim_c Sequencing Core for library preparation and sequencing, if applicable. Please inquire about specimen aliquoting prior to extraction, if needed.

  • Hands-on service: users/customers are provided training to run the QIAcube instruments themselves for a significantly reduced rate compared with the hands-off service. Users are responsible for purchasing their own extraction kit and centrifuge adapters; machine consumables such as pipette tips and other materials are provided by mim_c.

Most column-based Qiagen kits are capable of automation on the QIAcube Connect MDx instrument, and the list is continually growing. Please visit the Qiagen QIAcube Connect website for an up-to-date list of kit compatibility.

Current service rates (valid through June 2026):

  • Hands-off (full) service:

    • UW-based budgets: $23.30/sample

    • External, non-UW-based budgets: $31.13/sample

  • Hands-on (user-directed) service:

    • UW-based budgets: $10.80/sample

    • External, non-UW-based budgets: $14.43/sample
